Do herbal products really work?

Had always wanted to find the lyrics of this song -- 会呼吸的痛. But always forgot about it. The chorus part, especially the highlighted part, is really matching my feeling. Every thought of him pain my heart so much that I think I cant breathe anymore. The breathless feeling is so usual to me now that I am used to it already. Sigh. I miss him.

Ok. Change topic from the personal one.

I went to a seminar about HPLC in UPM today presented by Dr Mustafa Ali Mohd from UM and Dr Rod McIlwrick from Merck Damstardt, Germany. Dr Mustafa gave us an extra talk on the traditional herbs and medicines trend in Malaysia. I can't agree more on what he was telling us. Was keep nodding enthusiastically when listening to his speech. What he had been telling us is always my worry towards what my mum and relatives had been doing and believing.

Dr Mustafa said, people tend to think that herbs will not give side effects like modern medicines. Some traditional herbs seller even claim that their product are natural and has no chemicals. LOL... Think about it. Even oxygen, water, carbon dioxides, charcoal, protein, carbohydrates, sugar are chemicals. How can a bottle of supplement not a chemical? Sigh. I worry the welfare of Malaysians who buy unknown materials from these so-called scientists who claim to know science.

And. People tend to believe what everyone is telling them about this Mr A who was healed from such and such disease and Mrs B who was healed from such and such cancer after consuming the product. Any proof? Any scientific proof? Are you sure it's not because of the food they took? How can you be so sure that they heal from the diseases because of the product but not from some daily life diets?

Furthermore, I keep telling my mum that dun consume something too frequent. There might be some unknown toxins in the food. We might not know, the scientific world is not so hightech until we can trace every compounds in the food. Especially those new food which is not fully researched yet. Something inside might be toxic to the body. Maybe take a bit the effect won't show or maybe for short period of time the effect wont show. Maybe 10 years later the side effect will show up. Dr Mustafa says in Malaysia because we are third world country, so that law and regulation on marketing a herbal product is quite loose. No toxicology test is needed for the new product to be marketed. As long as it is free of pathogens and heavy metals, they are "safe" to be consumed. Unlike european countries which are very strict on toxic content of any food or herbal product, Malaysia is very loose in this.

So folks, dun ever think the herbal product is THAT SAFE until you read scientific proofs on that particular plant yourselves. And one thing very important! Dun believe in everything you see in internet! If you wanna find scientific proofs, use Google Scholar. Dun use normal Google. Normal Googles normally only got advertisements. All company selling the herbal product telling nice nice words on the product.

And! Even if it is scientifically proven, you have to read properly. How many success cases? 10 in 500? or 480 in 500? If the percentage of success case is low, how can you risk you life with such plant? Dr Mustafa said that a manufacturer of a local herbal products claimed that UM has done research on this plant and showed that it can decrease the blood glucose level. But in fact, Dr Mustafa's paper stated that the plant only manage to decrease the blood glucose level by 2 seconds and then the blood glucose level will shoot up to normal again. He stated there that the lowering of the blood glucose level is not due to the secondary metabolites in the plant but the acid in the plant which makes it lower just for a while. But the companies said it can cure diabetes summore quote Dr Mustafa's work. See the marketing scam? Sigh.

People just want to earn fast money by cheating money from cancer patients. And being sick is the least everyone want. That's why people just take whatever is said to be good but did not really ask whether it is bad for health. Just belief in rumour. Sad..

My goodness. I write until so long. Hope I dun bore you with this. Hope you pass this message to anyone you know.

5 reasons I hate cats

1. I had an unforgettable shocking experience with cats. When I was yamcha-ing with my friend at a mamak stall, one adult cat jumped onto my lap grabbing my knees with his front paws begging for food after I telling the cat sternly "There's no food here". The cat was literally attacking me. *Gasp*

2. Cats are arrogant. You can see from their narrowed eyes. The eyes are like telling people "Back off! I have no time to layan you". Or. the eye can also be interpreted as "yea..whatever" look. It's pissing me off.

3. When cats do their 'business' with their partners they make very obvious sound which is very annoying. Why so loud la. Until everyone know what you're doing. I'm not interested also...

4. Cats are cold blooded la. Why are they categorized under warm-blooded category? They have no intimacy and loyalty feelings towards human. (Or maybe I dun feel any from my grandma's cat)

5. They always brush my leg with their body when I'm eating at mamak or roadside food stalls. So gross one. They should respect our privacy ma. Why come kacau when I'm eating. I always get a shock when I feel something furry is brushing my leg when I'm eating.

IW 13-15 June 08

Was reminded by CP that I havnt posted anything on IW yet. Ok la. Will just post up several pictures taken from Christal Loh, Zhiyong Lee and Zhenning Wong. Have to give credits to the photographers for taking great photos from the camp.

For most of you who dunno what is IW and how it looks like. Here are some of the photos.

Staff tents

Participant tents

Hehe. See the difference?

Chilling on a hammock

Washing up by the river. This is where I wash my face and brush my teeth. Oops, dun let Raleigh ppl know I poluted the river with my tooth paste. hehehe...

Campfire. By the time I get there it's not flaming anymore. Sigh. The last time I saw a flaming camp fire (if dun count in the one Yen made at the Kutu Pool) was 8 years ago when I was a staff in a leadership camp in 2000. My goodness! That was so ancient long time ago! Oh I miss the tribal group dance around the fire back then. lol.

Great food supply from camp team. We had spaghetti, sardin, bak kut teh and vege soup. Oops. If the participants know we had been eating luxurious food they will mogok us. lol.

Long table made from bamboos (or is it wood?) for meals

Decamping on the last day.

Hiking. Nice rocks. Was there last year Jan IW. Miss those times too.

Some climbings. Time to dirty your body. Muahaha..

My rafting faci team. My face looks fair. This is before the sunbath at Kutu Pool. Or maybe because I just had a cooling face wash from the river. Damn syok la wash the face at the river at 6 something in the morning.

Doing funny stuff with Su Lan

Limbo game

Kiap head game. lol. Modified from kiap leg game. If you see them playing the game you sure can't stop laughing one. Imagine they have to avoid the rotan from kiap-ing their heads. lol.

Getting excited, participants, faci and coordinators.

Getting excited during group photos. Everyone just jumped around with the banner singing "Raleigh Raleigh Raleigh~~ Raleigh~~ Raleigh" modified from the Ole Ole song. There's a video in BJ's Facebook.

The pictures might show what we did but not the bonding because bondings cannot be seen but can only be felt.

I can't wait to go for the next one. =)

Obscenity

Haha. I did something very wat-tat just now.

My back was very pain from frequent bending during work. So I requested a back crack from CP.

I ask her to press on my back when I'm lying down on my chest. But she push like no energy like that. So I asked her to push harder.

Then at the same time Keen called. Then while chatting on the phone with Keen I asked CP to "Push harder! Push harder!" Like very obscene like that. lol. Then when she got it cracked, I heave a sigh of relief "Ahhh.. She fuk sai~~". lol. Another obscenity. lol. CP said I ruin her reputation. lol.

Another Jason Mraz's

I love Jason Mraz songs. After the I'm Yours song there's another nice one from his new album called Lucky. =) Would like to dedicate this song to Heng. Coz I'm lucky to have you. =) Get Pei going to tease me again. haha.

Another song which I really like and proud of is "Here in My Home" by Malaysian Artistes For Unity, by Malaysians for Malaysians. It's frequently played in local radio stations e.g. My Fm and Fly Fm (seldom listen to Hitz lately so not very sure about Hitz. hehe). You can download the songs and videos at www.malaysianartistesforunity.info. I'm downloading now. Hehe.

p/s: I like the extra low vocal at the very first part. I like guy with such voice when they singing. Damn man one. hehe.

p/p/s: I like the Tamil rapping part. Damn nice. Hehe. Although I dun understand. And the English part also nice. Chinese and Malay one so so only.

My first powerbar

I think recently everyday is a fully-utilized day for me. Friday night I had my swimming training right after work, Saturday tuition and after that time to hang out with Zhuang and Mei, Sunday morning went to a debriefing training with Raleigh folks and then afternoon having some time to rest for tonight's swimming training. Am supposed to treat my arms with counterpain before the training tonight and gain some sleep from the previous insufficient sleeps to boost energy for tonight's training.

See what I bought just now? Haha. A very small by its size but a very costly dinner. Powerbar and powergel. RM14 total.

Tonight I am suppose to eat the Powerbar 1 hour before the training as my dinner as recommended by HaoWee to test on the efficiency of that bar on my energy level and my performance so that we got used to it during our exam.

Powergel is a back-up during the training just in case I need some turbo for the 100m. Hehe. But the Guardian only had one last pack of powergel and its flavour is raspberry. Ewww. I think I will prefer tangerin. Sigh. Nevermind, I will try to slurp down everything without tasting it (or without making myself to feel nausea by the taste. lol).

--------------------------------------

Back to the fully-utilized day saying. I requested my bro for a meet up someday just now. Both of us are very busy and cannot find time for each other.

I was missing my brother very dearly today. And the more I think of him the more I feel sorry for being a bad sister who did nothing to maintain (or improve) the bonding between us. I realized that for all these years in KL I had been meeting my friends and acquantance but my bro.

I admire how Heng's sister maintain the bond so well with her brothers despite the long distance. I feel ashamed as an elder sister. A lousy one. Sigh. I think the problem is me la. For being too immatured to lead my bro through his growing process. He was the one who led me through the childhood. Being a loner is another thing. I was very introvert when I was young and find myself more comfortable doing stuffs alone. So, I guess I sent some unseen signal telling everyone to back off from me and leave me alone. Was not a very friendly person back in those days. lol. And as a big sister I think I din do well in protecting my bro enough la, in the sense of deciding things, teaching him something I know, cover up for him when he's in trouble. I was an ignorant loner. Now I hate my young self. How I wish I can go back and change everything but what had not been done hadn't been. So what I can do is just to grief the past and move on with what I have now. But the saddest comment I heard from Heng was that "it's too late to bond already coz both of you are so old already now". Sigh. I wish otherwise.

Will try to put more faith in myself to achieve this big goal. To stitch back the gaps. And what says the Law of Attraction? That anything you believe in and strive towards will be yours. I think there's chances la. Good ones =)

Wah. So long never write sentimental post already. I feel so insecured to pour it out here but nevermind la. Not the whole world is going to read my blog anyway. Hehe. =)

Bronze Medallion Awaits me next Sun!!

The big day is on 29 June which is next Sunday!! It's the Bronze Medallion exam I had been waiting for. The cert and medal awaits. Muahaha. 11 days countdown to the day. OMG! I have to start training every day now. Either train myself or with my swim partner.

I mean it. Swim around 1-2 hours a day now so that I can make the 100m 100s part. This is for the international cert from Belgium. Actually normal Bronze Medallion dun need this part one. But I want to challenge the challenging one. =)

And isn't it more meaningful to get an international cert? So that I can be life guard every country I go (if I really have the chance to go other countries). Yea. About life guard. I'm looking for lubang to become life guard now. Anyone got a clue? After heard Alvin Teo from IW recce told me about his friend working as a life guard on weekend in a club swimming pool I was thrilled. I really want to get a chance to apply my knowledge la, seriously.

And I cant wait to go Bukit Jalil swimming pool tomorrow! Yeay! Coz I heard Poovan said it's deep, more than 2 meter deep. I can't wait to have a more real experience in training my life saving skills. Cant wait cant wait. =)

Ok la.. Gotta go training now. Ciao!

p/s: Too bad I have no water resistant digital watch. So I cant time my 100m 100s myself.

Update: Bronze Medallion exam postponed to 13 July. Good good. More time for me to practice 100m =D

Back to civilization

I was back last night. From IW camp. To civilisation. So many days didn't bathe or shower already, come back the first thing was to have a long shower. Then I lie on the bed to do some work. And then I fell asleep on my bed with a pen in my palm and lights on. And when I'm awake it was 6 something in the morning already. The pen still by my side, blanket still folded nicely, lights still on. Miraculously, I reached work very early today. Was the third who reached the lab.

The camp was a good experience. And I haven't got enough from it yet. I want more. But am not very confident with my debriefing skills. And from the post-mortem we had last night, there's a discussion about this and I realized that without relevant experience and just join as staff, more specifically a facilitator, will affect the name of Raleigh and demoralise the participants. Sigh. This makes me reconsider going for the next one because I really duwan to ruin it although I really hope I can go for the next one to gain more experience on this. Dilemma. Sigh.

Other than the debriefing part, I really like my logs head leadership. He planned everything perfectly with a detailed briefing 2 weeks before the camp, clear commands to everyone, patient, clear responsibility to every logs team member and being strict to the timetable and our responsibilities, except the driving part where I had to follow his car coz everytime also cannot follow up one. He's a fast driver. But I think Choon Wei will add "And you're a reckless driver".

There are some photos from the IW when I was in Kutu Pool team (checkpoint check and back up crew during the trek) taken when I was too bored waiting for the participants to go up and come down the hill from noon till night. If we were to take a video of what we did in Kutu pool people will think we, the Kutu team, were insane. hehe. Imagine having to stay at an isolated place without much thing to do except (1) lying on the rocks and do sunbathing or (2) floating on the water and do sunbathing as well.

Swimming, sunbathing, lying on rocks sounds normal, but having too much of that and lack of communication with outer world might lead to extraordinary acts. That's how the insanity set in. If you're lucky you will see us chewing on milo powder, jumping here and there imitating some tribal dance, laughing hysterically when nothing was funny to laugh about, playing swords game with branches, taking stupid photos. And no, I'm not going to show that photo. It's way too 'cool' to be shown here. Haha.

Being a staff in IW taught me quite a lot actually. I didn't know how to set up a tent, now I know. I didn't know about debriefing, now I know the theory (still need more improvement on the real debriefing la). I didn't know organizing a camp will have to consider on so many things, now I know roughly what it is about. I didn't know where is the water source, this time I manage to have the chance to drink straight from the water source on the last day morning.

OMG. I still haven't wash the clothes, shoes, sleeping bag, mess tin and bag from the camp. Gotta go wash up myself and the things already. Ciao.

p/s: The modified game and kungfu perfomances before the closing ceremony by Adrian, BJ, Adam and Edmund was damn funny. I laughed until stomach pain. Hope can watch it again. Haha..

p/p/s: One thing I really missed was star gazing. I think nothing can ever replace the star gazing experience we had after the trek in our IW when we were still participants Lying by the roadside (on the tar road actually) and look right at the sky despite the tiredness and sleepiness after the long trek. The starry night was so magnificent. It was one whole stretch of starry sky from the left eye corner to right eye corner. And the thousands of stars. We pointed at some unknown galaxies, guessing the name. And then we closed our eyes and let the silence calm our souls. I miss the moments. Ahhh~~~

Funny commercials

Last night I was searching for the link of Kenny Sia's Mister Potato commercial to send to CM. It's really funny I think. The hilariousness is attention-catching. Especially the facial expression of the 'fishes' when they open their mouths to wait for more potato chips. Very funny.

This made me feel like watching funny commercials. Then I remembered that this 7-11 express payment Thai commercial I watched back in few years ago is very funny. So I went to youtube to search for it again. Miraculously I manage to find this video with the keyword "Thai funny ad". This shows how good this commercial is. Very excellent in passing the message to audience and fun to watch at the same time. This commercial is my all time favourite. Thumbs up recommendation from me.

Then I look for other Thai advertisements. These are ok ok la.. Too exaggerating already. But the ter-shred the document the boss gave one is damn funny. And the overjoy reactions the guys had when they found a carpark space. Very true indeed but normally we won't act that way, it somehow speak my feelings. =P Carparks are hard to find nowadays.

Scent freak

I have very unique taste for scents. Some find it very weird, some share the same taste.

1. For those who know what LB agar/broth is, I love the smell when it is being autoclaved. I mean those clean LB agar/broth, not LB waste with bacteria. Autoclave of LB waste has distinct smell of bacteria. Not as nice as clean LB. My colleagues are all very traumaed by my like towards LB smell. Haha. CY said she heard from a seminar that excessive inhalation of Trypton in LB will intoxication. hmm...

2. I just discovered that 70% ethanol has very nice smell. It exactly smells like alcohol la. And I can feel the sudden of dizziness when I sniff in the vapour. This is a good (but expensive) substitute for alcohol which has the bitter taste I dun like. Haha. I think sniffing 70% ethanol is the least risky of all coz it should be quite purely ethanol (is it?). Hehe. And ethanol is edible ma. So it should be ok gua. =P

3. I like the smell of bleach. Either chlorine in the swimming pool or the bleach from clothes washing. After contacting the bleach, the hand will smells a bit bleach. I like the smell since the day I started to like swimming. It's something like Pavlov's theory I guess. You know, the theory where bell is rang when food is served to a dog, then the dog secretes saliva whenever the bell rang. Whenever I smell bleach, I will feel the euphoria I feel when I'm swimming.

Mum had been warning me about the risk of sniffing too much chemicals coz she thinks this will lead to cancer. She might be right. Die la. I somemore go and sniff more when I find that I like the scents. Higher chances of getting a cancer? hmm.. Should I just stick to the 70% ethanol? lol.

I'll leave the discussion here. Gotta go sleep already. So tired. Nights.

Was reading Nicole's new post. It brought me tears and heartache (eh. serious one, it really hurts). And my heart feel very heavy. How can such Cambodians endured such cruelty back then? So sad...

------

Just read paper today and found that Clinton's out and go to support Obama pula. Maybe this is the best resolution for her. Maybe she knows that she will lose. So the best resolution is to support the potential winner, help him to win and then she can become vice president. Clever tactic.

-----

Heard from Poovan that Bukit Jalil got a very nice and deep swimming pool (about 2 meters deep). Makes me feel like going there and have a swim. Hehe. Entry fee is RM5 if I'm not wrong and free on Friday but only free for a few session.

Just random

An update on my life saving training:

(1) 300 m within 9 minutes ok as usual
(2) Swim 50m extended-tow 50m finished in 3 mins and 14 seconds (1 more second slower then I'm screwed), hmm.. need more practice on this.
(3) Swim 25m crosschest-tow 25m with clothes on still ok.
(4) Double restrain failed at first restrain (sink and panic when victim struggle. Can't maintain victim head's above the water when victim is struggling)
(5) Swim, chin-tow and blow air x 3 failed at transfering victim's head (leg can stand on the ground or the side of the pool while transfering)
(6) Throw rope sometimes ok sometimes not.
(7) Learn new thing on how to loosen the victim's grip in water (3 types: 2 types of hand grips and bear hug from behind)
(8) Didn't practice on pulling victim out of pool, recovery position, 100m in 100s, underwater 25m, jump water technique, bandages.

++++++++++++++++++++++++

Finally bought sleeping bag and mess tin for IW camp. Last time I borrowed sleeping bag from my brother. But when I wanted to borrow from him this time he suggested me to buy one for myself since I like outings so much. Hehe. He's right. So I get myself my own sleeping bag. =) I bought the cheapest one. Only RM19.90. Hahaha. Then I realised that the sleeping bag can be zipped open and become an extra tilam. Somemore it's quite big when it's spread out. About queen size. Haha. I earned one extra tilam. =D Mess tin costs more than what I expected. RM18.90 for 2 mess tins. I thought around RM7 each le. Why so expensive one...

I still can't wait to go IW =D

+++++++++++++++++++

Arranged time for my students for substitution of next week cancellation. But I think cancellation of tuition class will happen again because

(1) my new job is demanding, might have to work on Saturday
(2) I might join other Raleigh activities
(3) I might teach swimming after I got my life saving cert

For me, teaching chemistry is not for the money already now. It's about the responsibility towards my students' results. I want them do good. But it's also the responsibility that brings me the stress and sometimes I find myself dunno how I should teach them to ensure they absorb the most out of it. Sigh. That's why I always dread to give tuition nowadays. It's stressful. Any tips Val?

Instead of buying clothes for myself in the Padini Concept store sales, I bought one more T-shirt for Heng yesterday. Last time wanted to buy the T-shirt one. But then no size. Then now Padini sales they sell the T-shirt at RM14.50, somemore with the size I want. What the hell. I bought another T-shirt (same category one) last time at RM25 le. Should have waited until sales. I didn't know it was new arrival back then.

So in conclusion I bought this T-shirt for Heng. Hope he likes it. =)

Just nonsense

What have you realized recently?
That I have so many things to do within a short period of time (I mean my personal life, not including work somemore)

Have you given your first kiss away?
Yea. Need explain more? lol.

If you were to be stranded on a deserted island, who're the buddies you would take with you?
Any one of the Raleigh people. Coz they have good skills when it comes to jungle and camping, and maybe food sourcing. Muahaha.

Are u satisfy with life you have now or you want more?
More than satisfying. =) I'm given many good chances. It's just depending on my performance on everything I'm having now. It's more on whether I can give my best.

What makes you mad?
When I'm already late and the traffic makes my mood worse. =P

What do you think of yourself?
Careless. Forgetful. Low self esteem. Eh? Why think of all bad things one. Really got low self esteem. lol. I'm cheerful, bubbly, lame (is this a good thing?), easy-go-lucky, easy to mix (means not a difficult person), truthful, like to think about life (and confuse myself more with various philosophies. haha), want to explore and adventure more because I think life is not only about studies and work.

Is there someone you're thinking of now?
Thinking when is Heng going online. Thinking of my dad whether he had a happy birthday today.

If you have faults, would you rather the people around you point out to you
or would you rather they keep quiet?
Tell me. At times I will cannot accept the fact, but slowly I will. =)

Who was the last person you hugged?
My mum. =)

Who knows you the best?
Mum, CP, Aud, Heng

Throughout ur life, what hurts you most?
I'm not gonna disclose this. But this is got to do with relationships. =P

Whats the last shocking thing you've seen or heard?
Yesterday when I heard the petrol price was increasing to RM2.70 by 12am today. Luckily went to queue up quite early (around 6 something) and saved RM24 from this. Today onwards my petrol full tank will be RM100 already instead of RM70 last time. =(

Ei! What am I doing now? I seriously need to start working on the preparation for the tuition now. See you in my next post.

Quality sleep in need

Life packed with schedule is a good thing. But, life without the time to have a good rest is disastrous. I had so plenty of time last year (even during honours at least I had time to rest on weekends), but now even my weekend resting time are gone. =( Everyone who heard me describe my weekend will go "whoa, your life is so interesting".

I love my life too, having to keep going without stopping. But sometimes I prefer a quiet one too. I hope for a day reading a book on my bed seeping a cup of tea with some soothing music on with the sun shining in which lit up my room. And when I feel like sleeping, I can just close my eyes and take a good afternoon nap. Ahhh... the long gone afternoon nap! I miss you! I have no time for this. I'm always busy during daytime and I am not supposed to have a nap during nighttime, otherwise how to sleep at night wor? In other word, I miss my quality sleep. Sigh. I need that.

My schedule is full until next weekend, from the swimming class tomorrow and sunday, to the tuition on saturday, to the possible extra tuition class one of next weekdays and finally to IW camp next weekend.

Somemore, I haven't bought sleeping bag and mess tin for the camp, and I desperately need a haircut coz my hair is too long until I look like a ghost now (maybe those Mr White and Mrs Float in the jungle might like to befriend with me if I go to camp with such long hair) and I am having my life saving exam soon this month which I am yet to prepare myself to.

Oh my god! Thinking about all these unprepared stuff I feel panic already. How can I relax and have a quality sleep when I think of all these?

Sigh. Life is interesting I can't deny, but I'm getting less relaxed. I desperately need some quality sleep.

One more pic

Just realised I left this picture out in previous post. This is the funniest la. Can make commercial advertisement =P

So anime-like! lol...

Everyone wants to meditate on the big rock.

Keen was missing

Elaine doing kungfu. Hehe. Funny.

Going up to the top

Adam going down to get something. Dun remember what drop down there liao. Quite steep there. I dun dare to go near there.

So many mountains nearby.

See how big the rock is at the top. Better than Bukit Tabur, not enough place to lie down.

Lying on the slanting rock

Monkeys pose on the slanting rock. We used self-timer.

Wind not very strong that day but still able to lift up my hair a bit. hehe. Was very hot that day. I wonder how we can sit there under the sun without wind for so long. =P

This moment was precious. Everyone just sat there quietly watching everything below us, and sometimes watching the birds flying pass us.

Feeling the serenity

Going down.
